SPUSD Update - March 23, 2022

Dear SPUSD Families, Faculty, Staff, and Administrators,

Spring Break is only a few days away, and we are looking forward to the final stretch of the school year including many celebrations, promotions, and graduation for the Class of 2022. The past few months have been busy with several construction projects, including the completion of the portable-to-permanent classrooms that created new art space for our elementary students at Marengo and Arroyo Vista. The Monterey Hills classroom building will be completed soon. Additional Measure SP projects will be completed during Spring Break including roofing replacement on some SPHS buildings. Plans for elementary playground improvements are also in progress.

Families with children of all ages may enjoy the various theatrical, musical, and sporting events coming this spring. I encourage families with younger children to attend the middle school or high school programs. These events are a terrific opportunity to begin building connections to their future middle school and high school and to learn about possible programs that may interest them.

One very special community event happening on April 27, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. is the unveiling of Anderson Auditorium at SPHS. The entire community is invited to SPHS for a naming ceremony recognizing former Principal Janet L. Anderson. We have linked to and attached an invitation and hope you will join us for this momentous occasion.

This week before Friday, one additional COVID-19 test will be distributed to students and employees. Please administer this test on Sunday, April 3 prior to returning to school on Monday, April 4. During the break, SPUSD will not offer COVID-19 surveillance testing. The testing program will resume on Tuesday, April 5. Registration for testing on April 5 will be due by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 1. Here is a link to testing sites in Los Angeles county if you or your families need to be tested while school is not in session.

We wish everyone a safe, peaceful, and restful break especially during this time of global unrest. SPUSD is committed to creating a safe space for all members of our community. Please openly communicate with your children about the issues in Ukraine. Here are some additional resources that may help with difficult but important conversations.

We look forward to seeing you back at school in April.

Regards,
Geoff Yantz, Ed.D.
Superintendent
