New Law Regarding Immunization Exemptions for 2016 and beyond
On June 20, 2015, Governor Brown signed SB 277 into law. This law, which went into effect on January 1, 2016, ends the ability of parents to sign a personal and/or religious beliefs waiver for vaccinations for their school aged children. Most families will not be affected by the new law because their children have received all required vaccinations for entry in child care or school in California. The only waiver now allowed is a medical waiver. If your child has a medical condition (or family history) which makes immunization medically inadvisable, either permanently or temporarily, you will need to have your physician write a note to the school/district which states the reason for and duration of the exemption. The doctor must be a California licensed M.D. or D.O. There is no provision for a delayed immunization schedule in the law, so your child will need to be current with his/her immunizations when he/she starts school. Students enrolled in SPUSD and who have a signed waiver prior to January 1, 2016, will be allowed to continue in school until they reach what the new law calls the “next grade span,” which means TK, K or 7th grade, at which point you must provide proof that your child has been fully immunized against all diseases for which immunization is required by California law.
