LOTTERIES
After sibling and new family registrations take place, two different lotteries will be held. First, the Dual Language Immersion (DI) lottery will be held to establish the DI kindergarten classes at Marengo (Mandarin) and Monterey Hills (Spanish), and then the new family lottery will be held to establish priority among the new families who have registered at each home school.
The DI lottery will take place on Friday, March 15 at 3:30 p.m. Results from the DI lottery will be emailed to participants. DI commitment forms are due to Marengo or Monterey Hills by 12 p.m. on March 26, 2024. The new family TK/K lottery will take place on Friday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m. These lotteries are open to the public and will be held in the District Office Board Room at 1100 El Centro Street, South Pasadena, CA. If you are unable to attend the New Family Lottery, you may call your home school or the Office of Instruction after 9 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2024 to find out your child's lottery number.
After February 7, 2024, student placement is determined at each school by date and time of registration.
IMMUNIZATIONS
Please remember that all incoming students will need to provide proof of the immunizations required by California law. If you need help obtaining vaccines, you may contact the Monrovia Health Services Clinic at 626-256-1600 where free immunizations are provided for children who do not have current health insurance.
Unless you have a medical exemption from a Medical Doctor (MD or DO in California) stating that your child should not receive vaccinations for a medical reason, your child may not be officially enrolled or attend class until your child has received all vaccinations required by the state of California for your child’s age range. As of January 1, 2021, California law states that any previous medical exemptions that were written on paper, or any new medical exemptions must now be entered in the California Immunization Registry for Medical Exemptions (CAIR-ME) online database when entering a new school or the next grade span (7th grade). Parents can request exemptions from their doctor via this website: https://cair.cdph.ca.gov/exemptions/home.
California no longer allows parents to sign a Personal or Religious beliefs waiver for vaccinations. If your child is currently up to date with his/her immunizations and additional doses cannot be given during the time of registration but are due at a later date, your child may be conditionally enrolled. Your child will not be allowed to attend even the first day of class without being fully up to date on his or her immunizations. The state does not allow any exceptions to this requirement. An alternate schedule of vaccination is not permitted by law even with a doctor’s letter.
NOTES
- Incoming Kindergarten students for the 2023-2024 school year must be 5 years old by September 1, 2023. This is per California Education Code (48000a), and no exceptions will be made. September 1 will be the annual cut-off date for all incoming kindergarten students. For the 2024-2025 school year, incoming Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by September 1, 2024.
- If you will be moving into South Pasadena after Monday, June 3, 2024 and before the start of school, please call the Office of Instruction at 626-441-5810 ext. 1120 to inform the office staff of your potential enrollment.
- If there are special circumstances for your child’s registration (English as a Second Language, Special Education, or health problems) please provide appropriate documentation, such as ELPAC test scores or current IEP or 504 plan at the time of registration.
- Working in South Pasadena and property ownership without actual occupation/residency does not constitute residency. Families must reside in South Pasadena before they can register their child at SPUSD.
- You may not register for school until you reside in South Pasadena and have your appropriate three proofs of residence, and registration must be done by the parent or legal guardian of the child.
- It is possible that your student will not be able to be placed at their home school, especially in grades TK/K- 3 where class size is currently 24 students per class. We will make our best effort to place siblings together at the same school, but this is not always possible.
- If you are the legal guardian of a student, or are residing in a "Dual Family Residency" (two families sharing a residence), you will need to contact Katy Nielsen at [email protected] for an appointment prior to registering your child(ren).
