Julia Johnson to Become Principal of Monterey Hills Elementary School

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. (May 22, 2026) – South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD) has hired Julia Johnson to serve as the principal of Monterey Hills Elementary School.

     Johnson comes to Monterey Hills after serving for the past three years as principal of Cloverly Elementary in Temple City. Before this leadership role, she was an intervention teacher on special assignment at Arroyo Vista Elementary School in South Pasadena. Throughout Johnson’s more than 15 years in education, she served as a primary and upper-grade level teacher at Arroyo Vista, a summer school principal for the South Pasadena Educational Foundation, and an elementary teacher at Rancho Canada in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District.

     Johnson is eager to return to SPUSD and is deeply committed to serving students, staff, and the community in a leadership capacity. She brings a proven track record of instructional leadership, guiding comprehensive Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and implementing Professional Learning Communities that improved student outcomes while fostering a culture of collaboration and shared accountability.

     Johnson’s experience includes working with diverse groups of students, including English language learners, gifted and talented students, and students with special needs. In her current position, she facilitates inclusive practices that ensure all students feel valued, supported, and empowered. She has also led Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) programs for students, earning county-level recognition for the work. Johnson is a leader who values biliteracy and is committed to supporting the Dual Immersion Program at Monterey Hills Elementary, continuing the tradition of fostering a welcoming school environment for students and families.

     Johnson earned a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s Degree from Azusa Pacific University. She earned her administrative credential from the University of Southern California. She looks forward to starting her new role at Monterey Hills Elementary School on July 1, 2026. Johnson will fill the principal position held by Jessica Zavala, who will become the assistant principal at South Pasadena High School on July 1.
