As part of their study of George Takei’s graphic novel-memoir, They Called Us Enemy, nearly 200 SPHS ninth graders visited the Go for Broke National Education Center and Monument and Little Tokyo Plaza in downtown Los Angeles this week.
A recent addition to the ninth-grade English Language Arts curriculum, the study of the text and the visit to the cultural center helped bring to life stories about the Nisei–second-generation, Japanese American, veterans–and their part in America’s history. Tour guides shared about the sacrifices of the Nisei and their work to ensure a future free of racial intolerance. Thank you to the SPHS ninth-grade English teachers for leading the students through this experience.
Go, Tigers!
