SPUSD BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES RESOLUTION SUPPORTING PEOPLE OF ASIAN ANCESTRY
District Commits to Leading Students in the Fight Against Racism
SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. (April 19, 2021) -- Last week, the South Pasadena Unified School Board (SPUSD) approved a resolution that supports people of Asian ancestry. Developed after the tragic murders of Asian Americans in March 2021, this resolution condemns hatred, xenophobia, harassment and violence towards people of Asian ancestry and commits to creating a supportive, inclusive culture that fully embraces students of Asian descent.
“Teaching our students to be good citizens and to uphold the principles of equality and respect for people of all backgrounds is core to the work of public schools,” said Superintendent Geoff Yantz. “We must prepare students not only for academic and career success, but also for success in personal and civic life.”
The full resolution may be viewed here. The newly created SPUSD Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee will also continue its discussions and plans to review the District’s policies and practices ensuring that they align to SPUSD’s commitment to recognizing and valuing the diversity, backgrounds, and abilities of all students, and providing them the encouragement to reach their full potential. The ongoing and most recent examples of discrimination and violence are a reminder that much work still needs to be done to end racism.
“SPUSD takes the responsibility of combating racism very seriously and is committed to honoring the diversity within South Pasadena,” said Superintendent Yantz.
