Elementary School Registration

Updated June 15, 2022

If you are not sure which elementary school is your attendance area school, please click on the PDF document below (Elementary School Locator By Street) to check your street address and determine to which elementary school it belongs.  South Pasadena residents' children are guaranteed a spot in one of our three elementary schools, and during the regular school year, registration occurs at your attendance area school. During mid-June through July, registration occurs at the district office, while the three elementary schools are closed. Also from August 1 - August 12, 2022, new TK-5 registration will also occur at the district office, and then resume at elementary school sites beginning Monday, August 15, 2022. All three elementary schools re-open on August 1, 2022.

  • Do not enter any District facility if you have any cold or flu symptoms including a cough or a fever.
  • Wear a personal mask that provides you the greatest coverage and comfort.
  • Use hand sanitizer and sanitize your hands often.
  • Disposable pens will be used during in person registration.
  • Please refrain from bringing small children with you to your appointment, if possible.

If you are a South Pasadena resident and would like to register an incoming TK - 5th grade student for the 2022-2023 school year, on or after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 16th, 2022, and your child will turn 5 by February 2, 2023,  please go to your attendance area school, based on your address, to pick up a registration packet, and sign up for your in-person registration appointment either during Sibling Registration week (2/28/22 - 3/4/22) or New Family Registration week (3/14/22 - 3/18/22). Please read the directions on the registration packet prior to completing your online AIR registration. Please complete your AIR registration on a dedicated computer (do not use a cell phone or ipad) by going to , and choose the blue "Students New to the District - AIR", located on the bottom of the screen, and use the dropdown choice of 2022-2023.

Registration is a two part process. Parents complete the online Aeries Internet Registration, or AIR, at, choosing 2022-2023 and the grade their student will attend in the 2022-2023 school year. They also have an in-person appointment to provide required documents of residency, birthdate of the child, and their immunizations.  New Family students registered during this time will be entered into the New Family Lottery, to be held on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 3:30 pm.

Schools will be available to register up through Wednesday, June 8th, 2022. School office personnel are off for the summer as of June 10, 2022. If you will be moving into South Pasadena between June 10th and the start of school (August 11, 2022), please call the Office of Instruction at 626-441-5810 X1120 to let them know when you will be moving in, the names and DOB's of your children, and address in South Pasadena, as they like to keep a list of who may be moving into the schools to anticipate enrollment. Summer registration dates will be posted by the end of May 2022, and take place at the district office while the elementary schools are closed.
Step two takes place at each school site for the 2022-2023 school year, and you must bring all requested documents (two copies of completed AIR registration, photo id of parent or guardian, birth certificate or passport of child, immunization records of child, and three required proofs of residency). Please look at the bottom of this page to see accepted proofs of residency by printing out the Registration Information Checklist. ALL DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED MUST BE ORIGINALS. If there are special circumstances (ESL, Special Education, or health problems) please provide appropriate documentation, such as ELPAC test scores or current IEP or 504 plan at the time of registration.

If you are registering a student to enter Kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year, and are interested in our Dual Language Immersion Program in Spanish or our Dual Immersion Program in Mandarin, please click on the attached link to visit our webpage with important information about the registration process and timelines: Dual Language Immersion Program

The information below pertains to South Pasadena residents only. Working in South Pasadena and property ownership without actual occupation/residency does not constitute residency.  Families must reside in South Pasadena before they can register their child into SPUSD.

Please be aware that as a resident of South Pasadena, your children are guaranteed a spot in one of our three elementary schools; student placement is determined within each attendance area school by date and time of registration. After New Family Registration takes place in March, and all data has been entered into the computer, three Individual lotteries for students entering grades TK/K-5  will take place on MAY 6, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. at the District Office Boardroom, 1100 El Centro Street, S. Pasadena; one for each school, (if needed), by grade level (as needed), with all the names of students registered during New Family Registration. This lottery will be open to the public.  Please do not attend if you are not feeling well. Parents/attendees will be expected to wear a face mask if mask mandates are still in place at that time.  Siblings enrolling in grades TK/K-5 are given priority registration and are not a part of the lottery process. If you are unable to attend the May 6 New Family Lottery, you may call your home school or the Office of Instruction after 9 a.m. on Monday, May 9th, 2022 to find out your child's lottery number. Please be aware that as a resident of South Pasadena, your children are guaranteed a spot in one of our three elementary schools; the lottery is used to place students who live in each school's attendance area. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) handout will be uploaded below after the lottery to help parents interpret their lottery number and to understand the process of student placement.

After March 18, 2022, student placement is determined at each school by date and time of registration. For additional information about the school district, please visit the "District Policies" option, then "General Info about SPUSD" option.

Beginning Monday August 15, 2022, new TK-5 Elementary registration resumes at your attendance area school.
The 2022-2023 school start date is Thursday, August 11, 2022.
It is possible that your student will not be able to be placed at their home school for the 2022-2023 school year, especially in grades TK/K- 3 where class size for the 2022-2023 school year is currently 24 students per class. We will make our best effort to place siblings together at the same school, but this is not always possible.
You may not register for school until you reside in South Pasadena and have your appropriate three proofs of residence, and registration must be done by the parent or legal guardian of the child.
Incoming Kindergarten students for the 2022-2023 school year must be 5 years old by September 1, 2022.  This is per California Education Code (48000a), and no exceptions will be made.   September 1 will be the annual cut-off date for all incoming kindergarten students.
If your child will turn 5 between September 2, 2022 and February 2, 2023, please be aware that he/she is eligible for Transitional Kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year.  If you do not know about Transitional Kindergarten, please click on the link in the locker below.  Transitional Kindergarten, or TK, has been held at Monterey Hills Elementary school and Arroyo Vista Elementary School for the past several years.  Once we complete our initial registration process for siblings and new families, we will be able to determine the number and location of TK classes for the 2022-2023 school year. TK students are not usually a part of the New Family Lottery; sometimes we need to conduct them to create priority amongst new families. Both TK and Kindergarten are half-day programs: AM class is from 8:10 am to 11:35 am and PM class is from 11:35 am to 3:00 pm. These are firmTK birthdate requirements, and no students born after February 2, 2018 will be accepted into TK for the 2022-2023 school year.
Please remember that all incoming students will need to provide proof of the immunizations required by California law.  If you need help in obtaining vaccines, you may contact the Monrovia Health Services Clinic at 626-256-1600. They provide  free immunizations for children who do not have current health insurance.  Beginning January 1, 2016, the only waiver now allowed is a medical waiver. If your child has a medical condition (or family history) which makes immunization medically inadvisable, either permanently or temporarily, you will need to have your physician write a note to the school/district which states the reason for and duration of the exemption. The doctor must be a California licensed M.D. or D.O. There is no provision for a delayed immunization schedule in the law, so your child will need to be current with his/her immunizations when he/she starts school. For more information on this new law, please click on this link: Health Information and Forms
If you are the legal guardian of a student, or are residing in a "Dual Family Residency" (two families sharing a residence), you will need to contact the Office of Personnel at 626-441-5810 X1130 for an appointment prior to registering your child(ren).  For more information, please look under "District Enrollment Policies" under "Guardianship Information" and "Dual Residency Requirements".
