Transitional Kindergarten

Last Updated 1/19/2017

Information about Registration for the 2017-2018 School Year

SPUSD will again offer Transitional Kindergarten (TK) for South Pasadena residents for the 2017-2018 school year. Children born between September 2, 2012 and December 2, 2012 are eligible to enroll.  TK is a half-day program, with the same beginning and ending times as our regular Kindergarten classes. The morning session (AM) is 8:10 am to 11:35 am and the afternoon session (PM) is 11:35 am to 3:00 pm. For the past two years, the TK program had been held at both Arroyo Vista and Monterey Hills. For the 2016-2017 school year, there are three TK classes, two at Monterey Hills and one at Arroyo Vista. We will not know the location(s) of our TK classes for the 2017-2018 school year until early June, after we have gone through the enrollment process and evaluated our enrollment numbers and space availabilities at all three elementary sites, but we estimate that we will have two or three classes within the district for TK. Enrolling for TK is identical to enrolling any new student in elementary school, so please click here for more info on dates and times for 2017-2018 enrollment information: https://spusd-ca.schoolloop.com/eementary_schools?no_controls=t

All TK students are eligible to enroll in Kindercare, one of our fee-based programs available at each of our elementary schools, offered through our Extended Day program, which extends the school day for TK/Kindergarten students from 8:10 am to 3:00 pm, regardless of whether you have an AM or PM session. Please be aware that vaccination requirements apply to TK students, and students must be fully vaccinated prior to the start of school.  The only waiver now allowed is a medical waiver. If your child has a medical condition (or family history) which makes immunization medically inadvisable, either permanently or temporarily, you will need to have your physician write a note to the school/district which states the reason for and duration of the exemption. The doctor must be a California licensed M.D. or D.O. There is no provision for a delayed immunization schedule in the law, so your child will need to be current with his/her immunizations when he/she starts school.

The Kindergarten Readiness Act, signed into law in 2010, is a historic reform to kindergarten education that gives California an unparalleled opportunity to ensure that our state’s youngest children are better prepared to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. The Kindergarten Readiness Act, SB 1381 by Senator Simitian, created transitional kindergarten, the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience for those students who are born between September and December. It also changed the kindergarten entry date from December 2 to September 1, so children enter kindergarten at age 5. The law phases in the new age requirement by moving the cutoff date one month a year for three years, beginning in the fall of 2012.

Across the state of California, the kindergarten entry date will change over the next three years as follows:

2012-2013: 5 years of age on or before Nov. 1
2013-2014: 5 years of age on or before Oct. 1
2014-2015: 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1

Children will be eligible for transitional kindergarten if they have their 5th birthday between:

November 2 and December 2 for the 2012-13 school year
October 2 and December 2 for the 2013-14 school year
September 2 and December 2 for the 2014-15 school year and each school year thereafter

Regarding AB 104, EC 48000(c)(3)(B)(I)

Due to space limitations, SPUSD has no plans to offer Transitional Kindergarten to students who turn 5 after December 2, 2017 for the 2017-2018 school year.
